Common Diving Medical Issues

Ear Infections (Otitis Externa)

  • Most common diving complaint
  • Caused by water trapped in the ear canal
  • Symptoms: Pain, itching, reduced hearing
  • Treatment: Antibiotic ear drops, oral antibiotics if severe
  • Barotrauma

  • Caused by pressure changes during descent/ascent
  • Ear pain, sinus pain, or tooth pain
  • Prevention: Equalize early and often, do not dive congested
  • Decompression Sickness (DCS)

  • Serious condition requiring immediate medical attention
  • Symptoms: Joint pain, numbness, dizziness, difficulty breathing
  • If suspected: Do NOT fly, seek hyperbaric chamber immediately

  • When to See a Doctor

  • Ear pain lasting more than a few hours after diving
  • Joint pain or numbness after diving
  • Dizziness or confusion after surfacing
  • Blood from the nose or ears
  • Persistent headache after diving
