Dengue Fever in Bali: Symptoms, Prevention & What to Do (2026)

Dengue is a mosquito-borne illness present in Bali year-round, with peaks during rainy season (November-March).

Symptoms

  • High fever (40C/104F)
  • Severe headache, especially behind the eyes
  • Joint and muscle pain (hence "breakbone fever")
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin rash (appears 2-5 days after fever)
  • Fatigue
  • Timeline

  • Days 1-3: Sudden high fever, headache, body aches
  • Days 4-7: Critical phase - fever drops but this is when complications can occur
  • Days 7-10: Recovery begins
  • When to Get Tested

  • Fever above 38.5C lasting more than 24 hours
  • Especially if accompanied by headache behind the eyes
  • Our doctor can perform a rapid dengue test at your villa (Rp 600.000)
  • Treatment

There is no specific antiviral for dengue. Treatment is supportive:

  • Paracetamol for fever (NEVER aspirin or ibuprofen - increases bleeding risk)
  • Fluids - oral or IV if needed
  • Rest - your body needs energy to fight the virus
  • Monitoring - platelet count and hydration levels
  • Prevention

  • Use mosquito repellent with DEET (20-30%)
  • Wear long sleeves during dawn and dusk (peak bite times)
  • Use mosquito coils or electric repellent devices
  • Choose accommodation with screens on windows
  • Empty standing water near your villa (breeding grounds)
  • Hospital vs Home Care

Most dengue cases can be managed at home with doctor monitoring. Hospital admission is only needed if:

  • Platelet count drops below 100,000
  • Signs of plasma leakage
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Bleeding from gums or nose
